Organizers of World Expo Reject Use of 'Taiwan' 2025世博會 拒我以「台灣」「Formosa」與會
Taiwan has been rejected from the 2025 Osaka World Expo under the name "Taiwan" or "Formosa." While the Tsai administration tries to beat the exclusion by participating in the mega event under the name of a new start-up, the opposition party believes it is an infringement of national integrity.
Osaka will host the 2025 World Expo, and Taiwan has allocated NT$2 billion for participation. As Taiwan is not a member of the International Exhibitions Bureau, however, it is limited to attending as a corporate entity. The organizers of the Expo have rejected the use of the names "Taiwan" and "Formosa." Taiwan will be participating under the name Tamayama Digital Tech Co.. As expected, Taiwan is blaming China. Premier Su Tseng-chang says China is responsible for Taiwan's inability to participate in the global community but the world will see Taiwan one way or another.
Su Tseng-chang, ROC Premier: “This is all we can get them to agree to, but it is enough for us to be seen, for us to exist, for us to expand and widen our space. There's no reason to attack us and oppress us when we haven't gotten what we want.”
Wang Mei-hua, Economic Affairs Minister: “It's true. We aren't participating as a country. We will apply (to attend) as a private corporate entity.”
Su called on lawmakers to stand united, while Wang Mei-hua promised "images" of Taiwan would be seen all over the exhibition venue. Under the Ma administration, Taiwan had its own "Taiwan Pavilion" at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. The pavilion was funded by NT$1 billion in private donations and operated by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council. KMT lawmakers are blasting the Tsai administration for spending NT$2 billion of taxpayer dollars on the 2025 Expo when organizers have even rejected the use of "Taipei." They say Foreign Affairs Minister Joseph Wu and Taipei's representative to Japan, Frank Hsieh, should be held responsible.
Lee De-wei, KMT Caucus Secretary: “Please explain how the name "Tamayama" going to increase Taiwan's international visibility. What are you doing to Taiwan? Where has your "patriotism" taken you? There's not Taiwan. There's no Republic of China. There's not even a "Taipei."”
Hsu Chih-chieh, Legislator (DPP): “Taiwan is not a member of the International Exhibitions Bureau, but we will continue to fight to use the name "Taiwan."”
Pan-green lawmakers say they won't compromise on the name "Taiwan" and if organizers won't allow it, Taiwan shouldn't attend. Su also took the opportunity to criticize Taoyuan City mayor candidate Simon Chang after Chang criticized the shady way Su Chiao-chun handled the Taoyuan subcontracting case, saying Chang is a "door god" for the party that is trying to scam people by "selling counterfeit medicine."
