Poll: Most Would Support Taiwan With Intelligence, Not Weapons 民調:中若攻台 多數國家民眾 支持提供情報

One Taiwanese analyst says Xi Jinping will not invade Taiwan in the short term but will step up actions to contain Taiwan's military. Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense says China will continue to prepare to invade Taiwan. A new survey published by Cambridge University polling 25 countries indicated that many countries and over half of respondents would support Taiwan.

The Veterans Affairs Council recently presented the military with accommodation vouchers to provide soldiers and officers with some rest and recuperation. In the wake of China's 20th Party Congress, National Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng says everyone has to be on high alert. One Taiwanese analyst says Xi Jinping won't invade Taiwan in the short term, but will expand military containment of Taiwan. The Ministry of National Defense says China has never stopped preparations for invading Taiwan.

Sun Li-fang, Spokesperson, Ministry of National Defense: “They will have targeted strategic moves and their military will continue to prepare for a Taiwan invasion. They will adopt many different deterrence strategies including the ones I just mentioned of a "gray-zone" campaign or cognitive warfare.”

Sun Li-fang says China has to consider not only military capability in resolving the Taiwan issue, but also geopolitical and economic changes as well. Sun also says Taiwan's military knows who the enemy is and is keeping that in mind at all times. Cambridge University recently published a poll on a hypothetical invasion of Taiwan. Over half of respondents in 25 countries said they would support Taiwan with intelligence and military advice if that happened. Very few said they would support sending troops or providing weapons.

Luo Chih-cheng, Legislator (DPP): “China's 20th Party Congress showed that is a dictatorship with grand ambitions. So, democratic countries must stand together. I believe both the leaders of democratic countries and the vast majority of people in the world can deter China from taking military action against Taiwan.”

The ministry will discuss the feasibility of increasing military pay -- currently NT$6,500 a month -- with other agencies.

國防部發言人孫立方說道：「他會藉由一種針對性的戰略布局，在軍事行動上，是不斷地去強化攻台的一個作戰準備，並且採取一種多元的這種威懾策略。就包含剛剛所提到的，不管是灰色地帶的這種做法，或者是併同認知戰。」

孫立方指出，中共借鏡俄烏戰爭，要解決台灣問題除了軍事能力，還要考量地緣戰略跟政經變化等，國軍秉持知敵明敵的精神，帶著敵情練兵。此外，英國劍橋大學做出一份25國的最新民調，就中共若武統台灣，多數國家且過半民眾願意對台伸援，但對於由美方為首派兵協防、提供重型武器認同者較少，多數傾向支持提供情報、軍事顧問。

民進黨立委羅致政表示：「二十大這個事情證明中國是更獨裁，對外的野心更大，所以民主國家站在一起，我相信也是不只是民主國家領導人，也是世界普遍的民意，這個對於嚇阻中國對台動武，我相信一定有很大的一個嚇阻作用。」

至於兵役延長到一年尚未定案，目前義務役薪資約6500元，外界關切薪資是否跟著調整？有單位提議以1萬5000元做為生活費，國防部並未否認，表示會配合相關部會的意見。
