Song 'I Promise' Under Controversy Over Eligibility for GBA 「良辰吉時」主題曲奪金鐘 傳'I Promise'非原創
Songwriters Hsu Chang-de and Mavis Fan together won the 57th Golden Bell Award for Best TV Theme Song with their song “I Promise” for the drama series “Twisted Strings” on the night of the 22nd. However, news soon broke out the next day that the song might have been ineligible for the honor. Culture Minister Lee Yung-te said the jury committee is carefully reviewing the song and its details.
Hsu Chang-te (Oct. 22, 2022), Co-songwriter of " I Promise": “To get nominated for this song was like being thrown in a raffle box, and now I'm lucky enough to get drawn out of the box to receive the award.”
Songwriter Hsu Chang-te happily received the award for Best TV Theme Song on the Golden Bell stage for his song "I Promise" in the drama series "Twisted Strings." A day later, controversy emerged over the eligibility of this song, pointing out that the song was not originally created for "Twisted Strings" but for the Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage celebration that took place in Taichung in 2021. The song had already debuted during the opening ceremony. Culture Minister Lee Yung-te said during interpellation at the Legislative Yuan that the jury committee is currently reviewing the case.
Lee Yung-te, Minister, Ministry of Culture: “We are in the process of investigating this case. We will offer more information to the jury committee for further review. If indeed the song is considered ineligible for the category, the award will be revoked.”
Lee said the award would be revoked if the song was determined ineligible, but a decision has not been made yet on whether the song that received the second-most votes would receive the honor instead. Lee said a conclusion would be reached within two weeks. The team in charge of submitting the song made a statement saying they had turned in full information when they submitted the song for Golden Bell consideration. In response to people commenting on his Facebook regarding eligibility for his song, Hsu Chang-te said the team in charge of submitting the song will offer an official response in time. Hsu did not pick up phone calls from the media. Meanwhile, Culture Minister Lee said the following regarding splitting the Golden Bell Awards ceremony into two days.
Lee Yung-te, Minister, Ministry of Culture: “I would give this year's event a score of 80. This year's the first we're splitting the awards ceremony into two days. We received different opinions and we welcome more. We will try to improve and reach a score of at least 90 next year.”
Lee emphasized that the awards ceremony will be done the same way next year as well. The problem of the event running overtime still exists and that remains to be fixed.
