Citizens Want Environmental Initiatives
Low-emission traffic, net-zero social housing and reusable container borrowing stations are three environment-related policies that voters most care about, according to a poll conducted by an environmental group. It is also calling on candidates to include environmental policies in their platforms.
According to a poll by an environmental group, the three initiatives citizens most want are low-emission transportation districts, net-zero social housing and container borrowing stations.
David Walther, Postdoctoral Researcher, Academia Sinica Center for Sustainability Science: “(Let people know) what the benefits of this are. (For example), net-zero transportation districts will get first access to solar-polar. If there's a YouBike station right outside my house, why wouldn't I ride it to the MRT? Let residents of net-zero districts benefit.”
Industrial emissions account for close to 50 percent of overall emissions in Taiwan, followed by transportation emissions at 14 percent. However, less than 20 percent of Taiwanese people use net-zero transportation like public buses. Some experts are calling on the government to establish incentive and reward systems, while others are calling on the government to pay attention to the effects of extreme weather.
Kuo Hung-yi, Secretary-General, Environmental Jurists Association: “The "accompanied effect" of Typhoon Nisat and the northeast monsoon caused flooding across Greater Taipei. Last year, we went through the worst drought of the decade. Cities need to be more resilient against extreme weather. This includes greater biodiversity and fundamental ecological solutions.”
Both environmental groups and academics are calling on candidates to clarify their environmental policies before the end of the month.
