The suspect surnamed Lin in the killing of two police officers on Aug. 21 is currently under detention. The way the police handled this situation has drawn criticism.
Tu Ming-cheng's Family Member: “I want to say to the justice minister and the director of the Agency of Corrections that every one of your actions and deeds is trampling on the hearts of the family members of those who died. You all are crushing the spirit of every grassroots law enforcement officer. Can you all do something, and stop using frivolous bureaucratic language?”
A family member of Tu Ming-cheng, one of the two police officers killed by the suspect surnamed Lin on Aug. 22, had this message for judicial authorities. She also criticized groups that want to abolish the death penalty. On Aug. 25, Legislative President You Si-kun headed to Tainan to offer his condolences to the family members of the slain police officers. He had previously demanded the death penalty for the killer, but backtracked and would only commit to saying that it can be appraised by society. He also promised the legislature will expedite the review of amendments to the Controlling Guns, Ammunition and Knives Act once the new session begins.
You Si-kun, Legislative President: “They say they don't want similar regrets to happen in the future. The law should be amended at once if it needs to be amended. Once the legislature starts its new session, I will make a big effort to provide assistance.”
The investigation into the double murder has entered its fourth day. The way the police handled this entire situation has come under criticism. Before the police solved the case, they had identified two men both surnamed Chen as suspects and their photos were leaked. The Tainan City Police Department said it will conduct a thorough review.
Fang Yang-ning, Commissioner, Tainan City Police Department: “Did any police officer leak the photos during the process? We of course will not shun our responsibility. I have opened an investigation and we are investigating what we should investigate. I want to face up to our errors. We will humbly and sincerely accept criticism.”
Lin is currently under detention. He said during an interrogation that he didn't intend to kill the police officers. He was drunk and had no self-control. The investigation continues.
