US Secretary of State Meets with Wang Dan|

June 4 is the 31st anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests. American Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with protest participants and student movement leader Wang Dan and posted a photo of them on the U.S. Department of State's Facebook. Meanwhile, President Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President William Lai also took to Facebook to share their thoughts.

This photo posted on the United States' Department of State's Facebook shows Secretary of State Mike Pompeo flanked by participants of the Tiananmen Square protests, including Wang Dan. The accompanying text said the secretary was honored to meet four of the brave participants.

During the meeting, Wang gave Pompeo three suggestions for dealing with China. He said this was the first public meeting with a U.S. secretary of state in 30 years, and thanked Pompeo for his support. This year is the 31st anniversary of the protests, and President Tsai Ing-wen also used Facebook to share her thoughts. She posted a photo of a calendar showing the date June 4, and wrote that China only recognizes 364 days of the year and forgets one. She added that days that can't appear on calendars have also occurred in Taiwan, but they are being retrieved one by one because Taiwan no longer needs to hide its history and can jointly ponder the future. Tsai also expressed her best wishes for Hong Kong and said she hopes there will no longer be concealed days anywhere on Earth. Vice President William Lai also posted on Facebook, directing a message to China. He said the Chinese Communist Party needs to carry out introspection, redress June 4, and adjust to the democracy trend.

Meanwhile, the Mainland Affairs Council demanded that Beijing reexamine the historical facts of the Tiananmen Square protests and apologize sincerely.

We urge the authorities in Beijing to squarely address the hopes and expectations of the people towards freedom and democracy and launch reforms that conform to democratic justice procedures soon. They also need to reexamine the historical facts of the Tiananmen Square protests and issue a sincere apology to genuinely resolve conflicts and contradictions and let a free, fair, and open society become a force for progress.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded during a routine press conference.

The Chinese government has already come to a clear conclusion regarding that political disturbance that occurred at the end of the 1980s. The new China has been in existence for 70-some years, and its achievements fully demonstrate that the development path chosen by China is the correct one and conforms to China's characteristics and circumstances.

The ministry did not post its spokesperson's responses to questions touching on Taiwan and the Tiananmen Square protests on its website, which was consistent with its censorship of the incident.
