CONCRETE LORRY PLOUGHS ACROSS RED LIGHT, KILLING FOUR|仰德大道水泥車衝撞意外 4死9輕重傷

Yesterday morning a severe crash occurred on the road down from Yangmingshan into Shilin, Yangde Boulevard. A concrete lorry coming downhill failed to brake and crashed into 22 cars and scooters. The incident injured 9 and killed 4 people. Among the dead were the lorry driver. Buildings on the side of the road were also damaged. About 8 am on July 21, on Yangde Boulevard, Section three, at the junction of Xin An Road, a concrete lorry crashed into a car turning left at the junction. The lorry was traveling full speed through the junction and crashed into the car, then ran into the oncoming lane. The crash was filmed by a cctv monitor at the junction and was also caught on the dashboard camera of a car traveling uphill in the oncoming lane, that the lorry broached. Cars and scooters piled up as the lorry ploughed into them. ==EYE WITNESS== It was like a house exploding, I heard it on the mountain. ==EYE WITNESS== The lorry didn't brake, it just went straight on down and didn't stop at the red light. The concrete lorry was traveling down the mountain road, it did not slow down and just careered straight ahead. At the junction of Yangde Boulevard Section three, number 64, with Xin An Road, it started to crash into vehicles and then swept all the way to Lane 48, where it came to rest. Police said it crashed into 13 vehicles and 9 scooters, shunting them along in front of it. Buildings by the side of the road had shattered glass, bent walls and battered door frames from the impact. The pile up of damaged vehicles which resulted from the crash, closed the road as police had to call in heavy lifting gear, and fire trucks to remove all the vehicles one by one, and rescue trapped drivers and passengers. The cause of the crash was failure to break, or break failure. == TSAI CHENG-LIAN Shilin precinct traffic chief== A woman who was in the lorry with the driver, said that the driver tried to break many times and used the handbrake. There was no alcohol level, we took a blood test in the hospital to check. Including the driver, three males were taken to hospital but had no vital signs. An injured woman who was taken to Hsinkuang Hospital later died from loss of blood. The crash resulted in 9 severely injured and four deaths. Yangde Boulevard is 6.4 kilometers long, it is both steep and winding. Each year there are over one hundred vehicle crashes along the length of the road. Over the past decade, 19 people have died and 1,200 have been injured.
