NURSING HOME FIRE TAKES 4 LIVES, INJURES 55|恆春南門護理之家大火 後續安置學問大

The fire at Nanmen Nursing Home in Pingtung on the morning of May 19 took 4 lives and injured 55. Another 89 residents who were stable and did not require treatment were sent to the day care center next door. Now the county goverenment has decided to accommodate them on the first and the third floor of the Nanmen Nursing Home. This also shows the lack of emergency and long-term care resources in Hengchun. The second floor at Nanmen Nursing Home remains charred. When fire accident occurred, 150 residents were sleeping. The uninjured 89 residents were evacuated to the day care center next door. Family members visited nursing home residents in the morning. ==RELATIVES== They had assistance from Department of Social Affairs and Bureau of Fire and Emergency Services helped us; otherwise there is no way they can settled down like this. Day care center is not suitable for long term care and Henchun has not enough beds for accommodating all nursing home residents, Pingtung County Government finally decided to settle the residents at the first and third floors of Nanmen Nursing Home. ==LEE CHIA-FENG Dep-Dir., Pingtung Public Health Bureau== On-site settlement is OK, because we also worry that too many residents flock to one place. Therefore we temporarily settle the residents who need medical observation here in the hospital. The Public Health Bureau emphasized, Nanmen Nursing Home is safe after fire inspection. The two residents rescued from fire point Room 208 is being treated at Nanmen Hospital and Armed Forces General Hospital in Zuoying, Kaoshiung. This fire accident demonstrated lack of emergency medical facility and long-term care resources in Henchun Peninsula.
