Now that Park Geun-hye has been removed from office, South Korean political commentators have shifted their attention to the next presidential election, which must take place within 60 days. Moon Jae-in, the former chairman of South Korea's largest opposition party, has opened a wide lead in opinion polls. His opposition to the THAAD missile defense system and his relative sympathy to North Korea may be a new factor of unpredictability in the already-tense political situation of Northeast Asia. South Korea's Yonhap News Agency and KBS television station have announced their latest joint polling numbers for the country's upcoming presidential election, showing former Minjoo Party chairman Moon Jae-in far in the lead with 29.9% support. Ahn Hee-jung, a local governor from the same party, is in second with 17%, and Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn of the conservative ruling party is in third with 9.1%. High public dissatisfaction with the status quo means that the election will likely be an internal battle within the current opposition. Moon has led the polls for ten straight weeks, and his policies have attracted much attention. ==MOON JAE-IN Former Chair, Minjoo Party== A transition of power shows that our country is just and knows right from wrong. Only then can the people's reform achieve full victory. South Korea has recently become a flashpoint in the political situation of northeast Asia, as North Korea conducts frequent missile tests and the deployment of the THAAD anti-missile system in South Korea has brought tensions between the US and China. If Moon becomes president, there may be major changes in store for South Korea's domestic and international policies. ==MOON JAE-IN Former Chair, Minjoo Party== We cannot deny that Kim Jong-un is the leader of North Korea. Whether we want to apply pressure to North Korea, implement sanctions or start dialogue, we have no choice but to recognize that he is our counterpart. 64-year-old Moon was a human-rights lawyer as well as an assistant to former president Roh Moo-hyun. He has shown signs that he will continue Roh's "Sunshine Policy" toward North Korea, saying that the goal of sanctions should be to bring Pyongyang back to the negotiating table. This is similar to China's position but runs counter to the US's policy of isolating North Korea. Moon has also opposed the deployment of THAAD and expressed unwillingness to bring South Korea into US-China spats. He has promised to re-evaluate whether THAAD is in South Korea's best interests if he is elected. In terms of economic policy, Moon calls for reform of South Korea's chaebols, or corporate conglomerates, to reduce their political influence and prevent future scandals such as the one that ended Park Geun-hye's career. South Korea's Constitutional Court ruled in favor of impeachment on the 10th, and the election for her replacement is legally required to take place within 60 days of the day following her ouster. Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn has said that the date of the election will be announced before the 17th. It is generally believed that the most probable election date will be May 9th.
