In Hong Kong, the special administration region's government earlier approved a plan to build it's own palace museum in West Kowloon, however public opinion was not consulted prior to the approval. Now, Hong Kong's democratic activists are lambasting the project as a waste of budget and a reminder of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.
Over 50 members of Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movement of China shouted slogans and marched inside the subway Central Station where a large advertisement for the Hong Kong Palace Museum was posted. They were protesting to Hong Kong Government for spending NT$661 million equivalent on a large advertisement in the West Kowloon Cultural District. The Alliance members were wearing headbands reminiscent of the ones worn by pro-democracy student protesters at the Tiananmen Square in 1989.

For us, when we look at this palace museum, what reminds us is not what is inside but what happened outside in '89 when tanks rolled into Tiananmen Square when the army, the people of the army opened fire on its own people.
Protesters criticized Hong Kong government's plan to construct a Palace Museum in the West Kowloon Cultural District without public consultation. The Alliance aims to use this place to host activities to remind people what happened at the Tiananmen Square crackdown on June 4, 1989.

In this case, the people in Hong Kong are angry because there's no proper consultation. We are not angry about the cultural treasure, but we are angry about the whole process.
Last June, Hong Kong Government commissioned the museum design deal to Carrie Lam who is Hong Kong's Chief Secretary and will run for Hong Kong Chief Executive election this year. Demonstrators accused Lam for violating the ethics on conflict of interest. Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying said his support to the museum construction in the West Kowloon Cultural District.
