COLLEGE STUDENTS HELP KIDS BUILD THEIR OWN CANOES|大學生伴偏鄉學童 打造獨木舟勇敢追夢

During the summer, some college students choose to travel, some would get a part time job and some in the next case, build canoes. A group of students from the National Taiwan Normal University decided to help elementary school students in rural areas building their own canoes and eventually try them out in the river with them. Slicing the wood into smaller pieces, this elementary school student is having a hands-on experience with building his own canoe. ==STUDENT Yilan Dong Shing Elementary School== Ned to slice the wood chip until there's only 1 cm left, so it won't break the skin later. I just want to learn so when I go back to school I can make my own (canoe). Building a canoe is all about team work. One needs to slice the wood, one needs to use the cotton string to tie everything together, and another one needs to apply the glue. Together, 10 elementary school students from rural areas in Yilan, build their own canoes from scratch under the guidance of college students. ==STUDENT Yilan Dong Shing Elementary School == We need to slice the wood, cut it and trim it. If I wasn't picked to be a part of this, I would still want to come, because it's nice to build a canoe. I've never been on one before. ==STUDENT National Taiwan Normal University == In the future, a lot of us will become teachers. Now it's an opportunity for us to guide them and that process can help us at the same time. Instead of traveling overseas during the summer vacation, these students from the National Taiwan Normal University end up helping elementary students at rural areas to build their own canoes. Their associate professor Hsieh Chih-mou is the driving force behind this project. ==HSIEH CHIH-MOU Assoc Prof., Dept. of Civic Education Leadership, NTNU== These children either come from dysfunctional families or families who need some help. Therefore, we hope to provide them some money (through fundraising) so the children don't have to ask money from home. Instead they can have some funds and support their family or even fulfill their own dreams. College student are here to work alongside the students as necessary, but it's also an opportunity for them to learn and lead. Most importantly, they want the kids to know, journeying through life is a learning process and someone will be there to guide them through it. After they're finished building, they plan to take a total of 16 canoes across the Dongshan river.
