A Kenyan court recently reached a verdict on telecommunication fraud committed by Chinese and Taiwanese suspects. The judge acquitted all 40 suspects. Among them were five Taiwanese. The Chinese authorities tried to influence Kenya to deport the five Taiwanese suspects to China to face further trial, however, the Taipei Liaison Office in South Africa is trying to prevent this from happening. The five Taiwanese and 35 Chinese suspects involved in telecommunications fraud had been acquitted by a court in Kenya. Although the judge ruled that the five Taiwanese suspects should be deported to Taiwan, Chinese authorities still tried to deport them to China for further trial. The Taipei Liaison Office Representative Chen Chung-ho in the Republic of South Africa tried to stop the deportation of the Taiwanese to China. ==CHEN MING-TANG, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Justice== We heard that the Chinese Embassy in Kenya tried to take control of the Taiwanese suspects, and a private plane had been arranged for a midnight deportation. Representative Chen Chung-ho of the Taipei Liaison Office in South Africa and the legal affairs secretary together with international media and Amnesty International are there. They are at a stalemate. The Ministry of Justice confirmed that the Chinese Embassy in Kenya was indeed set to take the five Taiwanese suspects for trial in China. The Taiwan representative in South Africa called international media and Amnesty International to come to the court, to create pressure on Chinese authorities. Premier Lin Chuan said the government has an obligation to extradite the five suspects back to Taiwan. ==LIN CHUAN, Premier== When Taiwanese fraud suspects are abroad, our government has an obligation and responsibility to extradite them back to Taiwan. Although we know this case involves with some cross-strait issues, we still need to work the proper process for extradition. Amnesty International issued a statement condemning China for forceful deportation, because the Taiwanese suspects would be at risks of human rights violation in China. Currently, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are trying to extradite the suspects to Taiwan.
