Taichung City Mayor Lin Chia-lung's car collided with a cyclist who was riding against the traffic. The car was traveling on the fast lane and braked when the driver saw the cyclist. But the accident still happened and the cyclist was found lying on the ground. To many people's surprise, the cyclist turns out to be the director of Li-Ming Preschool, Lin Jin-lian, who had been missing for several days.
The surveillance footage from the side door of Shuangshi Junior High School was released by the Taichung City Police Department, and shows the moment when a vehicle carrying Taichung City Mayor Lin Chia-lung hits a passing cyclist.
The mayor's vehicle came out, and he (Lin Jin-lian) rode out. He was riding against traffic to reach the sidewalk on this side. The mayor's vehicle was more or less stopped here, and then he collided with the mayor's car.
The mayor's vehicle followed road traffic regulations.
Taichung City Mayor Lin Chia-lung attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the school's new activities center on Nov. 6. As he was leaving, there was this incident with a cyclist. The police investigated and found that while the cyclist was riding on the wrong side of the road to the zebra crossing, he suddenly crossed the street. The mayor's vehicle was traveling in the fast lane. Although it braked, it still hit the cyclist. The cyclist suffered injuries and ended up lying on the ground. An ambulance was called, and transported him to China Medical University Hospital for treatment. The director of the city's Information Bureau explained the incident to the media.
It was noticed very early on that there was someone riding against traffic on a bicycle towards him. The driver stepped on the brakes, and his reaction was prompt. It's a pity that this accident still occurred. The Taichung City Government will work harder to ensure the Liming Kindergarten case is handled properly. However, regardless, we don't wish for accidents to occur.
The driver of the mayor's vehicle was given a breathalyzer test, and the result was zero. The police say there were no violations of traffic regulations. As for the cyclist, he was conscious but not fully recovered. It turns out the cyclist was Lin Jin-lian, the director of Li-Ming Preschool who had been missing for five days. The city government has plans to demolish the preschool. Opponents of the demolition say Lin had lost a lawsuit over this case, and may have been depressed over the demolition.
Both the missing person incident and this morning's accident show the long-standing pressure the director faced over the rezoning system and committee.
The police took a sample of Lin's blood for testing, as he was unable to undergo a breathalyzer test. They are still trying to clarify the facts regarding this incident, such as why Lin was riding against traffic and why he collided with the mayor's vehicle.
