To protect the safety of students, the Taipei City Department of Education started providing self-defense alarms to elementary school students this year. The department encourages the children to keep the alarms on them at all times to strengthen safety consciousness.
When people hear the alarm, they know a student is in trouble. To improve student safety, the Taipei City Department of Education recently distributed personal alarms to elementary school students.
One hundred and twenty decibels is really loud! It's almost as loud as a landing plane.
It's really convenient to have if we're in trouble. You just have to pull it and it's really loud.
Some students thought of the device as a fun toy in the beginning, while others thought it was a convenient way to get help when needed. One parent likes the initiative but says safety consciousness education needs to start at home.
This is something that has to start at home. Parents should live up to this responsibility.
Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je, who is the face of the campaign, says he has been personally teaching children how to use the alarm because self-help is very important in dangerous situations.
(There's) self-help, mutual aid and public aid. Self-help means having the ability to protect yourself. Community care is still most important. If you hear that sound and just ignore it, it's useless. So, all of society needs to know that when they hear the sound, it means someone needs help. Otherwise, it's useless.
Ko says the city is thinking about creating a standard emergency sound for the alarms. The city spent NT$ 19.97 million on the alarms, which have been distributed to 115,750 students.
