Aug. 23 will be the 60th anniversary of the 823 Artillery Bombardment. Many veterans' organizations around the country have organized events to mark the anniversary.

On Aug. 23, 1958, China's People's Liberation Army launched an intense artillery bombardment of Kinmen. This was the first salvo of the 823 Artillery Bombardment, and over 30,000 artillery shells of varying sizes hit Kinmen during the course of the day. By Jan. 7, 1959, over 400,000 artillery shells had been fired at Kinmen. On Oct. 25, 1958, China announced it would only bombard Kinmen on odd-numbered days, and the two sides continued to bombard each other with shells containing propaganda leaflets on alternate days of the week.

There were two bombardments when Eisenhower visited Taiwan (June 18, 1960). We had already loaded our guns.

In 1954, Taiwan and the United States signed the Sino-American Mutual Defense Treaty. The 823 Artillery Bombardment is considered an attempt by China to test the American commitment to Taiwan. The U.S. immediately sent the U.S. Navy Seventh Fleet to help Taiwan. However, China under Mao Zedong only bombarded Kinmen, and made no efforts to invade. Scholars say the political warfare component was not low.

You should follow up artillery attacks with action. We saw no actions whatsoever. Mao Zedong may have used external operations to reinforce internal controls and to promote some matters that he wanted to achieve.

The only point of agreement between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait was that each claimed to be the only legitimate government of China. After the 823 Artillery Bombardment, Chiang Kai-shek pledged to unify China under the Three Principles. The military strategy shifted to 30 percent military, 70 percent policy. The 823 Artillery Bombardment is considered a watershed in cross-strait policy.

What he said was that Chiang would help his comrades to get the motherland back, that we will get you a house and a beautiful wife, and any of Mao Bandit's comrades should get on planes and seek asylum, that the steamed buns we have over here are bigger than pillows.

Aug. 23 is the 60th anniversary of the 823 Artillery Bombardment. Many of the soldiers involved in the bombardment have already died. The two sides are no longer at war, but tensions remain. China has become a power not only in the Pacific, but also in the Indian Ocean.

It (China) actually also sent a signal to the U.S., which was that I am capable of stopping you, and I will stop you. It also said it is capable of threatening Taiwan and causing Taiwan to split apart internally.

Kinmen has turned spent shell casings and fragments into one of its most famous products, knives. Kinmen is also home to the August 23 Artillery Battle Museum, while Xiamen allows tourists to visit the battlefields used during the bombardment.
