Taichung's NT$1.34 billion Wuri Station began operating 12 years ago. Due to the original design, there is a limited commercial space ratio. This had caused Taiwan Railways to have a restricted commercial space for development, which in turn led to the third to fifth floors to stand idle, and is now being criticized for space wastage.
Travelers rush to and fro in Taiwan Railways' Wuri Station. The station also serves the high speed rail system and will serve the MRT's Green Line in the future, which means it must have the capacity to accommodate more people. The station was designed to be open and spacious, but many people say space is being wasted.
I think it's a pity there's so much space just sitting idle. It should be put to use.
Some people say there are so few stores in the station they didn't even know there were other floors. Many feel the NT$1.34 billion station was poorly designed and wastes space. The Urban Development Bureau says when the station was inaugurated in 2007, it was unable to attract tenants because commercial space was limited due to the station serving two rail systems.
(At the time, the entire area) was part of the high speed rail's urban plan. The plan designated a certain amount of space for commercial use, but didn't take into account Taiwan Railways' (Wuri Station). This is why the station initially had difficulty attracting tenants.
The city government says commercial space will be reallocated between Taiwan Railways and the high speed rail to ensure a certain percentage of the total area is designated for commercial use. Taiwan Railways says it held a new tender last year and will be able to start collecting rent from tenants at the end of the year. Meanwhile, the third to fifth floors are being renovated and can hopefully be rented out by the end of the year.
