Claw machine arcades have sprung up all over Taiwan. To stand out from the competition, owners are using all sorts of creativity. In Tainan, there is an arcade with a claw machine filled with real bank notes, and the claw was replaced with an electric fan. Players have to use the fan to try and blow the cash into the opening in order to win. However, this has caused concern on whether this machine has breached the gambling laws in Taiwan.
An electric fan blows cash around. This fan has been installed inside a claw machine, in the place where a claw would normally be, and cash has replaced the prizes. A video showing this revamped claw machine has recently gone viral. Some netizens even reported this machine for open gambling.
(You would try your hand at this?) Yes, I'd try playing it a little more.
It's real money. (Are you enticed?) I'm okay, I feel neutral about it.
A reporter discovered this revamped claw machine is not open to the public, and its money slot has been sealed. It was revamped by the claw machine arcade's owner to be used as a special type of lottery machine. It only accepts vouchers that can be converted from winnings at the other claw machines. The owner hopes this machine can attract customers and boost his business.
Sometimes we think of letting customers play for coupons, not raffle tickets, because you can't see how raffles are carried out. We're not seeking profit, and we wrote clearly that this machine cannot be operated when we're not present.
The owner adds this is one way to thank customers, and move away from the opaqueness of raffles. The feedback from customers has been positive. However, this machine has also caught the attention of the police.
This is the first time that we've come across this special operating method. We still asked to inspect the machine.
The police say it remains to be clarified whether the owner needs to report, apply or register the revamped machine, and whether the machine touches upon gambling.
