Peak travel season is here. To meet the needs of travelers to and from eastern Taiwan, Taiwan Railways has launched standing tickets on the Eastern Line's Puyuma Express, Taroko Express and New Tzuchiang Express trains on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The tickets will be available through Sept. 2.
There will be 120 standing tickets available on every train. The standing tickets can only be purchased the day of travel and there are no discounts.
With 148 trains running on weekends, standing tickets will allow Taiwan Railways to serve an estimated 17,760 more travelers per week. Some tourists say this will be a big help, but others say they won't consider standing tickets when they're not even discounted.
The tickets will probably appeal to some people because it's always seats on the Eastern Line are always in short supply.
You're already making me stand and you're not even going to give me a discount? No thanks.
Due to safety considerations, standing tickets will be limited to 120 per train. Standing tickets can only be purchased at train stations on the day of travel. Travelers with no tickets, e-tickets or "periodic" tickets can still buy standing tickets, but the fare will be 1.5 times higher.
