A true celebration to women this day. On June 24, Saudi Arabia officially lifted its ban on women driving. Many women with licenses hit the streets at midnight sharp on June 24th to enjoy their new autonomy.

As soon as the clock strikes midnight, women get into their cars and hit the road. Some use their phones to capture the moment for posterity. On the 24th, Saudi Arabia officially lifted its ban on women driving.

Today is a historic day. I am grateful to our leaders who made this decision. This is a wonderful day. We are very happy. We have already been driving for a few minutes.

Mohammad bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's new crown prince of one year, has spearheaded many reforms and played an instrumental role in getting the ban lifted. Despite opposition from conservative religious factions, he wants to pave the way for an increased presence of women in the workforce. It is no surprise his initiatives are very popular with young women.

So all I can think about, I can still do my own stuff. I don't have to ask for anyone to take me around.

Saudi Arabia first announced last year that the ban would be lifted along with announcements of women-only driver training programs and special shelters for female traffic violators. While Saudi women can now drive themselves around, they are still banned from opening their own bank accounts or applying from passports and traveling overseas on their own.
