During a medical accident at the National Taiwan University Hospital, staff had mistakenly used the wrong type of liquid for hemodialysis and affected six patients. The hospital is criticized for not reporting the incident immediately, but the Ministry of Health and Welfare said, that the current laws do not mandate hospitals to report accidents, unless it could lead to a spread of disease.

Medical staff at the National Taiwan University Hospital recently used the wrong type of liquid during a hemodialysis procedure. A total of six ICU patients were affected. Despite the hospital admitting their mistake, many still criticized the hospital for not reporting the issue immediately after the accident.

The current Communicable Disease Control Act mandates, in incidents that might lead to the spreading of virus, the hospital must report it immediately. However, there is not regulation on the report of other types of medical accidents.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare said that hospitals do not need to proactively report medical accidents unless it could lead to the spreading of disease or virus. The ministry said that if the Legislature passed the law to mandate the hospitals to report similar incidents in the future, they will help enforce the law by issuing fines. On the other hand, Taipei City's Department of Health has begun investigating the incident at the hospital.

We began our initial assessment of the situation last Saturday. In the near future, we will ask the hospital to provide written documents in order to find out exactly what happened.

Taipei City's Department of Health said they have already asked the Hospital to provide written reports, and that they don't rule out the possibility of interviewing the medical staff individually to find out whether their procedure had broken the law. The National Taiwan University Hospital had since upgraded their equipment to avoid confusion of different types of liquid used in medical procedures.
