The Democratic Progressive Party held a press conference today and announced their decision not to concede to Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je in the mayoral race -- unless he joins the DPP. The DPP will nominate their own candidate this month for the Taipei mayoral election. The DPP also conducted a poll on President Tsai Ing-wen's approval rating as she nears her second anniversary in office. The poll shows President Tsai's support rating is at over 50 percent. Her disapproval rating is less than 50 percent. The DPP says even though Tsai's approval rating has fallen slightly, it is still up to par.

On the eve of President Tsai Ing-wen's second year in office, the Democratic Progressive Party polled the public on her long-term care, pension reform, daycare, wage rise and national security policies. In stark contrast to polls conducted by media outlets, the DPP's poll gave Tsai a support rating of over 50 percent. Over 53 percent of respondents attributed lower support for Tsai to the slow progress of her reforms.

Some people want the scale to be less or the speed to be slower. Some people don't want reform at all. There is divided opinion, but support for being on the reform path is universal. It's just that some people are conservative about the achievements of the reforms.

The DPP's survey put Tsai's disapproval rating at under 50 percent and her approval rating at over 40 percent. Tsai's disapproval rating in a recent Kuomintang survey, however, was over 70 percent. The DPP attributed the wide gap to polling methods.

Because this party has a polling committee and the committee has four to five experts and scholars on it, we never say that we are the ones conducting the poll. We use these scholars' names to conduct polls in the name of "research."

The DPP says Tsai's approval rating has slid just a tiny bit but remains up to par. The party also says Tsai's long-term care policies have been met with widespread support and her administration will continue to work hard in the future.
