The 71st World Health Assembly will begin in Geneva on May 21. Taiwan has not received an invitation to attend this year's WHA. China's foreign ministry says the reason is the Democratic Progressive Party administration's failure to recognize the one China principle and the 1992 Consensus. In response, President Tsai Ing-wen said Taiwan only needs to continue working hard, as there will come a day when international organizations have to recognize Taiwan.
Taiwan has not been invited to attend the 71st World Health Assembly, which begins on May 21 in Geneva. Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung said he still intends to lead a delegation to Switzerland to share Taiwan's experiences with delegates.
Taiwan is a country with a very comprehensive system. We of course have the right to attend, as everyone has the right to health. The world should not forget this point. We will probably choose to send a letter of protest.
On May 7, China's Taiwan Affairs Office said the reason why Taiwan is not allowed to take part in this year's WHA is the Democratic Progressive Party administration's refusal to recognize the one China principle and the 1992 Consensus.

Meanwhile, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the DPP bears the full responsibility for not being invited. In response, the Mainland Affairs Council lodged a protest. It said, in recent years, China has thwarted Taiwan's attempts to take part in World Health Organization technical meetings, and Taiwan has only been able to take part in 30 percent of meetings. China has also failed to report Taiwan's epidemic situations, in contrast to the TAO's prior promise of "proper treatment of Taiwan." President Tsai Ing-wen also responded to China, using the two Koreas as an example.
Its (China's) interpretation leads to misunderstandings and misjudgment, and is a great challenge to the stability of cross-strait relations. We hope to sit down for a discussion to dissolve these misunderstandings on the basis of equal status, mutual respect and no political preconditions. This way, there won't be any misjudgment.
Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the WHA to recognize that only the democratically-elected government of Taiwan is allowed to represent the Taiwanese people. It added a failure to do so will lead to gaps in disease prevention, and all parties will win if Taiwan is allowed to participate.
