HUNDREDS OF PET BOTTLES FOUND IN PINGTUNG'S LIOUCIOU WATERS|小琉球海底堆滿寶特瓶 撈起百公斤廢棄漁網

Hundreds of plastic bottles have been found lying on the seabed in the waters of Xiao Liouciou, an island off the coast of Pintung. Environmental groups say the bottles were probably carried there from elsewhere by ocean currents. They nevertheless call on people to cut down on the use of plasticware and stop littering. This is Sanfu Harbor's ocean bottom in Pingtung's Liouciou, many drifted PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles are present in the deep waters. Volunteer divers spent much time on cleaning, but the task seems endless. ==Voice: CHEN PENG-YU, Volunteer== Liouciou has not had much rain, and the PET bottles look like have been drifting for quite a while. I was thinking, those PET bottles maybe washed here by heavy rain. They don't look like abandoned waste. We picked up seven large bags of PET bottles the other day. Divers also picked up abandoned fishing nets with a total weight of over 100 kilograms. Environmental pollution in Liouciou is getting worse. The place once was a popular ecological world for green sea turtles. Environmental groups said, the trash was not thrown out locally, but driven by currents from other places. ==Voice: CHEN PENG-YU, Volunteer== Even if we recycle them, they still exist on this earth. Handling those bottles is very troublesome. Therefore we urge people not to use them. Environmental groups emphasized, the speed for picking and cleaning up trash is always slower than the speed of trash produced by human beings. Only minimizing use of plastics will contribute to a less environmental problems.
