NATIVE LANGUAGE LESSONS TO START IN KINDERGARDEN|讓母語扎根 母語教學擬提早至幼兒園

According to the Ministry of Culture's draft National Language Development Bill, native language lessons should be implemented as early as in kindergarten. If the bill passes, then there will be a significant change to Taiwan's native language education. ==NS== I know how to say "grandpa" and "grandma". (Is there anyone else you know?) I love my grandpa and grandma. I want to play toys with them. The three-year-old speaks fluent Taiwanese with her grandparents. However, the little girl's mother, whose mother tongue is Hakka Chinese, feels out of her depth when it comes to passing down her native language to her daughter. ==MRS. CHANG parent== (Do you hope to pass down Hakka Chinese to your children?) I do. However, there is little opportunity to speak the language in daily life. To preserve and further develop native language skills, the Ministry of Culture proposed a draft bill on national language development. According to the draft bill, native language lessons should be implemented as early as in kindergarten. This will be a significant change to Taiwan's native language education, if the bill is passed by the Legislative Yuan. ==WU HSIAO-HSIA Division Chief, K-12 Education Administration, MOE== The immersion program will help to promote native language education in daily life. We encourage kindergartens to enhance children's native language skills by listening to songs, reading books, and playing games in native language. Parents and civil groups are looking forward to the government promoting native language education. ==MRS. CHANG parent== It will be more diverse. (Do your children speak in mother tongue when they are at home?) They speak Mandarin. However, there should also be lessons for native language in elementary schools, junior high schools and high schools. The K-12 education curriculum should design and offer an environment and regular courses for native language education. The Ministry of Education said that the government is now promoting native language immersion kindergartens. Currently, there are 10 kindergartens offering the pilot immersion program. Starting from next semester, the number of such kindergartens will increase to 30. In the 2016 fall and 2017 spring semester, subsidies given to kindergartens to promote native language education were at NT$17 million. In the future there will be more budget allocated to kindergartens for native language teaching.
