LEE'S CASE TAKEN ON BY UN'S INVOLUNTARY DISAPPEARANCES GROUP|聯合國受理李明哲案 邀家屬9月出席

Lee Ming-che was listed by the United States as a person who needs political assistance, after his arrest by China. The Taiwan Association for Human Rights said that the United Nations Human Rights Committee's Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances has taken on Lee's case and asked his relatives to a conference in Geneva in September. The European Union Council will vote on whether to support Lee's release later this afternoon Taiwan time. Now missing for 109 days, the former DPP worker Lee Ming-che is still held in China. His wife, Lee Ching-yu and Taiwan human rights groups have sought international assistance to get him released. They are gradually getting a response. The Taiwan Association for Human Rights said that the United Nations' Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances took on Lee's case on June 23 and invited Lee's family to go to Geneva for a meeting. ==CHIU YI-LING Sec-gen, Taiwan Association for Human Rights == Of course, Lee Ching-yu is very grateful to the United Nations for their concern over the case and their acceptance of it. After the UN officially took the case on, they will start to collect information on the victim from this side and go and ask China about him and demand a response. The TAHR said that it is the first time that the UN human rights system has taken on a case from Taiwan. However, if the working group does go to China to investigate according to regulations they need permission from China first. There has been no word from Lee. Recently, his wife appealed to the European Union for help and received a response that the EU Council would vote on support for the case on June 6. After this the TAHR will hold a media conference and hold further activities to support Lee's release.
