Last month, the National Immigration Agency cracked the nation's largest child trafficking case. Starting from 4 years ago, a total of 11 Vietnamese children illegally entered Taiwan under the pretense of joining relatives, but they were sent instead to work as farm laborers. The Yulin Prosecutors Office yesterday closed its investigation and formally charged 22 people posing as parents with various offenses, but stopped short of accusing them of human trafficking. This is a false birth certificate to allow the child to enter. Last month a dedicated team from the National Immigration Agency found a number of Vietnamese used illegal agents to make false birth certificates to allow children into the country on the pretext of a familial relationship. == LIN RUI-LING(2017.5.26.) Captain, NIA Taichung Service Station== Through a local agent in Vietnam, they obtained false birth certificates at a cost of around US$3,000 to US$7,000 and applied for passports at our local representative offices to enter Taiwan. Between 2013 and 2016, this group of Vietnamese posing as parents arranged for 11 children between the ages of 8 to 15 to enter the country, at a cost of between NT$9,000 to NT$12,000 each. They lied that these were their biological children and took them to Nantou and Yunlin to work as tea pickers or farm laborers. Twenty-two people who posed as parents were prosecuted on violating passport regulations and providing false information to officials. ==HUANG YI-HUA Yunlin Prosecutors Office spokesperson== Children and young people born in Vietnam had false birth certificates showing them to be the offspring of Vietnamese and Taiwan spouses and allowing them to enter Taiwan to be parents. The laws which they violated were providing false information to officials and violating Article 30 of passport regulations, using false documents to apply for Taiwan passports. However, investigators found the false parents only obtained false birth certificates to allow the Vietnamese children to enter Taiwan and did not find any evidence of buying them, thus it could not be prosecuted as a people trafficking case. The 11 children want to stay in Taiwan, but as they are here on false documents after the case is tried they will be returned to Vietnam.
