SEA TURTLES DIE IN HUNDREDS FROM INGESTING PLASTIC|海龜頻擱淺.遭誤捕 7成上岸奄奄一息

Every year, hundreds of sea turtles continue to wash up on the shore of Taiwan, and when these turtles wash up on beaches, almost 70% of them are already dying. Some were caught on longline hooks and in fishing nets while some mistake floating plastic materials for jellyfish and choke to death while trying to eat them. What is this? A straw. A chewed straw. Stranded green turtles, some were already corrupted with smells. Human disposables were found in this dead green turtle's stomach and intestines. ==LEE SSU-WEI Ph.D. Candidate in Marine Biology, Nat'l Taiwan Ocean Univ.== We learned that when green turtle has indigestion, it would feel ill and lead to a vicious cycle. When it is ill, green turtle easily gets hit by boats or stranded to the shore and injured. Lucky green turtles are sent to National Taiwan University Veterinary Hospital for emergency care. After treatments, they will be transferred to Gongliao Marine Resources Conservation Area in New Taipei City. After recovery, green turtles will be put back to the ocean. ==CHEN I-LIN Veterinarian, Nat'l Taiwan Univ. Veterinary Hospital== After so many treatments and everyone's effort, the green turtle is ready for returning to the ocean. I think this is the most important. After this, that would be its destiny. We certainly do not hope to see it stranded again. From hatching to finally swimming to the ocean, green turtles must fight with Mother Nature for survival; but the key to survival depends on the human to leave them a clean habitat.
