On May 27, a walk was held at the shore of Datan algal reef, calling to halt construction of an LNG receiving terminal that is scheduled to be built there. The Datan algal reef is the biggest algal reef in Taiwan, and environmental groups worry that such construction will lead to the reef's extinction.
As the tide retreats, dark-red algal reef appear. This breathtaking scene is Taoyuan's Datan algal reef, the biggest and earliest-known algal reef area in Taiwan. Recently, the reef area was scheduled as the site for CPC Corporation's third LNG receiving terminal. Environmental groups worry that the construction will lead to the reef's extinction.

They should not do damage to the algal reef. No natural resources should be destroyed.
==EVENT PARTICIPANT==
The CPC Corporation should not destroy the ecosystem for the sake of its own interests. It will be too late for them when all algal reef disappear.
On May 27, a walk was held on the shore of Datan algal reef, calling for thousands of people to voice for the algal reef. This is the sixth year of the event. The theme this year was "Datan algal reef, don't ever say goodbye." There was also a beach clean-up and a concert following the walk.
==PAN CHUNG-CHENG President, Taoyuan Union==
Once the third LNG receiving terminal begins its construction, 77 hectares of the algal reef will be buried. However, this is not the end. We think that future development, the 230-hectare large Kwun Tong Industrial Area, will reclaim more land from the sea.
==LIU CHING-YU Deputy Researcher, Taiwan Endemic Species Research Institute, COA==
The crustose coralline algae here in Taoyuan, along with some unknown species, may disappear from the world if the Datan algal reef is destroyed.
Environmental groups and experts said that once the third LNG receiving terminal begins its first stage of construction, a 77-hectare large algal reef will not be the only victim. The southern Guanxin algal reef natural reserve will also face destruction. The domino effect will eventually wipe out all algal reef in Taoyuan. Therefore, they called for the CPC Corporation not to destroy the Datan algal reef and for the government to protect this natural phenomenon that has existed for over 7,600 years.
