The Yemeni coastguard lamented the lack of "respect for humanity" as the bodies of 42 Somali refugees taking a boat to Sudan were killed in a helicopter attack were brought ashore on March 17. The refugees, who were from Somalia, included women and children and were trying to reach Sudan from war-torn Yemen. They carried official United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees documents. On their way, they were attacked by gunfire from a vessel and then an Apache helicopter near the Bab al-Mandeb strait, a strategic waterway at the foot of the Red Sea. It was not immediately clear who carried out the attack. A sailor who was operating the boat said 80 refugees had been rescued after the incident. The Iranian-backed Houthi militia overran Yemen's capital Sanaa in 2014 and forced President Mansour Hadi to flee into exile. The Houthi currently controls that area of the Red Sea. Saudi Arabia and its Gulf Arab allies have carried out thousands of bombing raids in Yemen since March 2015, in a campaign to restore Hadi's administration. The rebels accused the Saudi-led coalition of carrying out the attack, as it has been bombarding the nearby coast. It accuses the Houthis of smuggling weapons into the port in small boats. There was no immediate coalition comment. TRANSLATED BY:CLARE LEAR
