On Mar 10, there was an oil spill off the north coast of Green Island. The Environmental Protection Administration mobilised small emergency groups to clean up. However, as the oil was dispersed by the waves and covered the whole coast and beaches it was hard to clean up. The EPA has now decided to clean stones one by one and then return them to the beach. It estimates that this will take four days.
Work on cleaning up the crude oil spill around Green Island has been going on for a week. As the oil has been broken up by waves into black globules and distributed all over the northern beaches, the cleanup teams can only use oil absorbent cloth and clean up by hand.
Currently, work on beaches from Zhongliao to Chaikou is still underway. The EPA plans to set up a cleaning pond on the bank to wash stones, rocks and shells, one by one, and then replace them on the beach. It estimates that this will take four days.

First, we will collect polluted rocks and then at a platform above the high tide mark, we will have a cleaning pond.
However, there is currently no way to go down and clean up the polluted seabed, as the wind and thus waves are still too strong. The EPA says when the waves have calmed down more, they will dispatch divers to clean the seabed. This is the worst crude oil spill on Green Island in 40 years and has exacted a huge negative impact on the marine ecology. The EPA said it will do all it can to clean up and restore tourism to Green Island.

We have almost completed the cleaning process, I think there isn't much effect on visitors or tourism.
The local administrative office says that the oil spill does not affect the quality weekend visitors' trips to the island. Using a shipping tracking system, the EPA has settled on the likely culprit for the oil spill, a foreign container ship, and will use all available Ministry of Foreign Affairs resources to demand an investigation by the ship's country and pursue responsibility for the pollution.
