Officials and residents say 46 people have been killed in a landslide at a garbage dump on the outskirts of Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, and several dozen people are still missing. Mayor Kuma said 15 bodies have been recovered since the landslide on the night of Mar. 11 at the garbage landfill site, which has been a dumping ground for the capital's garbage for over 50 years. About 150 people were at the site when the landslide occurred. Kuma said 37 people had been rescued. Many people at the site had been scavenging for a living, while many others actually live at the site where shanty houses built of mud and sticks are inexpensive. Dumping had stopped in recent years, but recently started again, as farmers blocked a new dumpsite. The renewed dumping is thought to have led to the landslide. TRANSLATED BY:CLARE LEAR
