In time for the 70th anniversary of the 228 incident, the National Development Council has announced that all documents related to the massacre in the National Archives have been declassified. The documents are over 228 meters in length laid out end to end, and comprise 1.37 million pages. Over 4600 documents previously classified as secret have also been declassified. Work to analyze, index, and digitize the documents will begin on March 1st. President Tsai Ing-wen said in a Facebook post that achieving transitional justice is one of the country's most important priorities as a democracy. She said that these documents are a path to better understanding history, and talked about the number of documents collected, international efforts to work on the archives, and the documents that have been declassified early. Civil groups are also holding a number of events in observation of the 228 anniversary. Academics from Jeju, Korea have been invited to Taiwan to discuss the similarities and differences between the 228 incident in 1947 and the Jeju Uprising in 1948, as well as the repercussions of these events. ==CHU LI-HSI CEO, Korean Studies Academy== (After 228), martial law was declared in Taiwan starting on May 19, 1949. It lasted for 38 years, the longest period of martial law in the world. Similarly, the Jeju Uprising was a forbidden topic for 40 years. ==PARK CHAN-SIK Jeju Scholar== In the process of dealing with the 228 and the April 3rd (Jeju Uprising) incidents, the people of Taiwan and Jeju are all concerned with one question: whether the autonomy of Taiwan and Jeju can be more actively pushed forward with our new leaders. On the Korean side, we are concerned with the possibility of a new political authority. The hope is that both sides can be reborn through this process. It took decades in both Taiwan and Jeju for the taboo on discussing these important events to disappear, and a process to discover the truth begin. Academics hope that a closer look at these historical traumas can help achieve transitional justice.
