SPAIN TO DEPORT OVER 200 TAIWANESE FRAUD SUSPECTS TO CHINA|2百多台人涉詐騙 西班牙將遣送中國

Spanish authorities have decided that more than 200 Taiwanese nationals detained at the end of the last year, after a telephone fraud ring they operated with other Chinese nationals were busted, will be deported back to China. When asked if this would be the largest group of overseas Taiwanese ever to be deported to China, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs offered no comments. But the Mainland Affairs Council did call on China to send the Taiwanese suspects back to Taiwan for prosecution. Last year, a case of international telecom fraud was solved jointly by Spain and China. A total of 269 Taiwanese and Chinese suspects were arrested in Spain. On Feb.17, the Spanish government decided to deport over 200 Taiwanese suspects to China. Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council said that ,on Dec. 19, it have called on China's Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council to send the Taiwanese suspects back to Taiwan for prosecution as soon as possible. ==CHIU CHUI-CHENG MAC spokesperson== We hope the TAOSC to contact Spanish authorities, and ask them to deport Taiwanese nationals involved in the case back to Taiwan for investigation and trial. We have continued to call on China to cherish the efforts that both sides have achieved in the past. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it summoned Spain's representative to Taiwan in January to elaborate Taiwan's stance on the issue. It asked Spain to deport Taiwanese suspects to Taiwan based on the Nationality Principle. However, the request did not receive any affirmative response from the Spanish government. Under treaties of deportation and mutual legal assistance signed between Spain and China, Spain will deport the suspects to China after finishing legal procedures. ==CHIU CHUI-CHENG MAC spokesperson== Spain's deportation of Taiwanese nationals to China is against the Nationality Principle. We are still making an effort to avoid this from happening. However, we are prepared for the worst. MOFA said that Spain has not completed the legal procedures. It will continue to negotiate with Spain, and fight for Taiwanese nationals' judicial rights through legal avenues.
