TAINAN PHEASANT PARK INFECTED WITH H5N6, CLOSED FOR 14 DAYS|台南官田水雉園區水鴨染H5N6 休園消毒

A raid was conducted at an illegal slaughterhouse in Kaohsiung just one day after the poultry slaughter ban went into effect on Feb. 17. Besides, a duckling in an ecological park in Tainan was confirmed to have infected with H5N6. The park has since been closed to prevent the outbreak from further spreading. An announcement was posted saying the 14-day closure of the Jacana Ecological Conservation Park in Tainan's Guantian District. A young teal was infected with H5N6, Tainan City Government was responsive and ordered the park closed from Feb. 17 to March 2. ==YANG CHIN-SHU Forest and Nature Conservation Div. Chief, Tainan Agriculture Bureau== During the closure, we will continue to check for other dead bird. If so, we will send the dead animal to the Animal Health Research Institute for examination. If not, then we will continue collecting their excrement for examination. The 15-hectare park is an important conservation area for jacanas. Park staff found one of the three dead birds had an infection of H5N6. The park has about 150 jacanas and they all seem normal. At the first day of banning all transport and slaughter of poultry, one illegal slaughter house in Kaohsiung's Daliao District was found slaughtered 20 roosters and hens. ==HSU MING-CHANG Livestock Div. Chief, Kaohsiung Agriculture Bureau== The suspect usually sells the birds to the stalls he known. After the slaughter, he sells by himself. He is a habitual criminal, he was arrested once last year. The Kaohsiung Agriculture Bureau staff invalidated and transported the meat to a rendering plant for incineration. The authority said this illegal slaughter house will be fined at the maximum amount of NT$100,000, and the city government will continue to check for illegal slaughter houses.
