CIVIL GROUPS CAMPAIGN FOR RIGHTS OF MIGRANT WORKERS|為60萬外籍移工發聲 籲政府正視移工權益

Civil groups are now campaigning for the rights of Taiwan's 600 thousand foreign migrant workers who need to go through an agency to get employed. They believe that some migrant workers lose their privacy as they are required to live with their employers. Cases of female migrant workers being sexually harassed or assaulted by employers are also often heard of. Therefore, civil groups are now urging the government to value migrant workers' rights. More than 50 foreign migrant workers danced in a campaign that advocates for their rights and autonomy. In Taiwan, foreign migrant workers must go through an agency to be employed. Sometimes their privacy is lost because they live with their employers. Some were even forced to hand out their personal IDs. Their basic human rights are seriously violated. ==MIGRANT WORKER Indonesia== Female migrant workers do not have a say in contract-signing. We are not able to sign contracts with our employers on our own behalf and are forced to go through a third party to sign a contract. We cannot keep our passports as someone else will take it away from us. Female migrant workers working as caregivers are especially exploited. They are often forced to live with employers and do family chores unrelated to their job descriptions. Some were even sexually harassed or assaulted. Although the Employment Service Act has been amended to protect them, some employers still violate the laws. ==LENNON WONG Director, Serve the People Association== Now that Article 52 of the Employment Service Act has been amended, all migrant workers should be entitled to choose to renew their contract or work for another employer in Taiwan once their contract expires. However, many agencies are taking sides with employers. They ask migrant workers to return to their home country and pay brokerage fees again before coming back to Taiwan. Civil groups urge the government to fully implement legal protection of foreign migrant workers, prohibit agencies to charge extra fees, raise caregivers' minimum wage, and enforce at least one rest day per week.
