Court proceedings have begun for the extraordinary appeal filed to the Supreme Court by Wang Kuang-lu, an indigenous Bunun tribe member who was sentenced to prison for shooting a protected animal. For the first time in Supreme Court history, the proceedings were livestreamed online. Wang appeared in court on the morning of the 8th, accompanied by his mother. However, he has still not told his mother that he may be going to jail, fearing the effect of the shock on her health.
Bunun hunter Wang Kuang-lu appears in the Supreme Court, holding his mother's hand. He was sentenced to prison for shooting and killing a protected animal to feed his mother. Having been granted an extraordinary appeal, he wishes to fight for indigenous hunting rights.

I want to see if I can get the judge to give us our traditional right to hunt, give it back to us.
==WANG'S MOTHER==
My son is very devoted to me. He always thinks of making my life better.
Even though they are appearing in court, Wang still has not told his mother that he may go to jail, fearing the effect on her health at 95 years old. The Supreme Court has begun proceedings with expert witnesses from the Council of Indigenous Peoples, the Ministry of the Interior, and other institutions.

He went hunting for his mother in their traditional hunting ground. This is part of the Bunun people's traditional culture, so I hope that this legal perspective will be something the court keeps in mind.
Controversy has arisen over sentencing indigenous peoples for taking part in traditional hunting activities, so the Supreme Court has allowed livestreaming of court proceedings for the first time in its history. However, some expert witnesses declined to appear on camera and could only be heard.

This could prove destructive to traditional indigenous culture, burdening indigenous people with a strong sense of deprivation and alienation.
When it comes to indigenous hunting rights, the court will have to weigh traditional culture against legal restrictions in its decision.
