While America has yet to see its first female president, US First Ladies have a highly visible position in modern American society, with their role having evolved over the centuries. From Eleanor Roosevelt to Michelle Obama, the US first ladies have been style icons, campaigners, hostesses and trailblazers. Now Melania Trump is rewriting the role, because she has kept a low political profile and said that she is in no rush, to move into the White House.
There is no job description for the First Lady of the United States. There are no official duties, no salary and the role is largely shaped by the women who find themselves in the position.

The active energetic first lady of the land, Eleanor Roosevelt had voted.
In the 1930s and 1940s Eleanor Roosevelt, who was the longest-serving first lady, blazed a trail advocating for women's rights and was a key advisor to her husband. She helped pave the way for first ladies to bring widespread public attention to particular causes and work with the government to affect change.

After a brief press, President Kennedy and first lady ventured from the White House.

Nancy Reagan was the helpmate, backstage adviser and fierce protector of her husband Ronald Reagan in his journey from actor to president. Her best-known project as first lady was the "Just Say No" campaign to help kids and teens stay off drugs. Both Barbara Bush and Laura Bush cared about education and literacy, and like most of their predecessors never crossed the line from advocacy into outright policy work. However, one first lady who did was Hillary Clinton. She steered the health policy initiative in the first Clinton term.

I'm going to need a job but it'll be a job out of politics. My husband's got to get a job. Somebody has got to hire that man.
After 8 years as first lady, what Michelle Obama does next is one of the most talked-about questions. She'll have a variety of options after being a high-profile advocate against childhood obesity, a sought-after talk-show guest, a Democratic power player and a fashion maven.
Just as the first lady's role is undefined, with each woman molding it to her personality, interests and comfort level, there is no script for what comes after the first lady finishes the job. Now Melania Trump faces that challenge.

Thank you all for your service. I am honored to be your First Lady. We will fight, we will win and we will make America great again.
She said she would stay in New York until her son Barron finishes the school year. That makes her the first first lady to live away from the White House since 1853. Meanwhile, her stepdaughter Ivanka Trump seems to fill the vacancy as an advisor, poised to be the most powerful first daughter in American history.
