6-10 ORPHANED BY PARENTAL SUICIDE ANNUALLY|調查:親人自殺 每年6-10名孩子無辜受害

In the wake of a murder-suicide that left a man and his two children dead, Ministry of Health and Welfare found out that according to the local government's social security database, the Chang household was not registered as a family with domestic abuse or mentally disabled member. Therefore, social welfare groups urge relatives to be alert, step up if possible, to help prevent the similar loss of more lives, and in particular children's lives. A father in Beitou District allegedly murdered his children due to a definite divorce with his wife. The man left his will, murdered his three children and finally committed suicide. According to the investigation done by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the family had no prior child abuse record. Every year in Taiwan, there are six to ten children become innocent victims to family homicides, nearly 40% occurred in non high-risk families. ==CHANG HSIU-YUAN Dir-Gen. Protective Services Dept. == Disorder in marriage or love may contribute to an incident; also there are cases related with personal illness, mental condition including depression. Also, nearly 20% factors come from financial hardship. Many families have troubles and never wanted to seek for help, nor victim wants to file report with police, therefore the ill family member becomes a threat. The thoughts of killing people are hard to prevent, however interaction with relatives might lower down the chance of tragedy from happening.
