FREEDOM HOUSE 2017 REPORT RATES TAIWAN 91|美人權機構評比 台灣躍升"最自由"國家

Top story today, Taiwan just became a freer country than the United States, because in a latest annual report on the degree of democratic freedom worldwide, Taiwan did better than America. With a score of 91 out of 100, Taiwan is ranked the second most free country in Asia, next to Japan. Here's our report. ==TASHI TSERING Human Rights Network for Tibet and Taiwan== Taiwan is a very good place. To promote human rights in Tibet, Tibetans in exile come to Taiwan to experience the country's air of freedom. According to the U.S.-based non-governmental organization Freedom House's 2017 report, Taiwan scored 91 out of 100 concerning the degree of democratic freedom. Taiwan's score was higher than the U.S., which only got 89 out of 100. Among the two main indexes, civil liberties and political rights, Taiwan's civil liberties rating improved from 2 to 1 this year, meaning that the country achieved the highest freedom on a scale from 1 to 7. ==WU HAO-JEN Prof Dept of Law Fu Jen Catholic University == In Taiwan, you can hear both pro-unification radical and pro-independence radical discourse. You can also hear left wing and right wing opinions, right? This kind of tolerance shown by the society has been deeply ingrained in the minds of Taiwanese people. Researchers said that Taiwan's society is tolerant of different discourse, which is a contrast to China, scoring 15 out of 100. As to Hong Kong, which fell 2 points this year due to Beijing's encroachment, continues to be listed as a partly-free territory with its score of 61 out of 100. Still, Hong Kong received a rating of 2 in terms of civil liberties, higher than China. China's political rights rating was 7, meaning that the county gave the least political freedom to its people. ==HUANG YI-BEE Covenants Watch Chief Executive Officer== I think they will continue to closely observe the interaction between Hong Kong and Taiwan. I think that many researchers in Taiwan are for Hong Kong. We should encourage Hong Kong people to seek the path of self-identification. Covenants Watch said that more and more Hong Kong students come to Taiwan to seek the road to freedom as China continues to be listed as a non-liberal country. Freedom House's report pointed out that China's increased internet surveillance and actions so forth reflected that the country sees a downward trend in freedom.
