President Tsai Ing-wen's meeting with Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega was originally to be a closed door meeting. However, it was relayed live by local media, which surprised even the local ROC embassy. On her facebook page, President Tsai said that President Ortega would support Taiwan's participation in international bodies and would strengthen trade relations with Taiwan. Analysts, however, caution that Taiwan should still remain vigilant in maintaining its relationship with Nicaragua.

I was notified by the Minister to go, ask the Minister the rest.
President Tsai looked happy as she left the hotel, as she was able to meet with the Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega for two hours.

Today's discussion was very happy, it was completely different from any speculation made in Taiwan.
Lee described the meeting as happy, but he had no idea that the closed door meeting was relayed live by Nicaraguan media.

It was broadcast direct from the meeting venue. Even our embassy didn't know about that beforehand. Because it is the day before President Ortega's inauguration so the schedule was a special situation.
On her Facebook page, President Tsai posted photos of her meeting with President Ortega and comments about their meeting content including that they would continue to strengthen their cooperative relationship. President Ortega said that he has always supported Taiwan's participation in international organizations.

Nicaragua itself, due to the nature of its regime has some contact with China, so there are still some areas of the relationship to worry about.
Analysts say that President Tsai and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have worked as hard as they can but Nicaragua and China still have mutual contact. Recently, cross strait relations are on a knife edge, and Taiwan still should deal cautiously with Nicaragua. In 1955, Nicaragua established relations with the Republic of China. In 1985 President Daniel Ortega broke off relations with the ROC and in 1990 resumed them. In 2009, when then-President Ma Ying-jeou visited Nicaragua, Ortega avoided him. With this history, there is a little anxiety in the relationship on the ROC's part. .
