PROTESTS AT CENTRAL REGION PENSION REFORM HEARING |年金改革中區會議 場內外抗議聲不斷

On Jan 8 at Taichung's National Chung Hsing University a hearing on pension reform was held. There were protests at the hearing. Public school teachers, the military and civil servants' groups say that the government has tainted them and urge that the law should not be applied retrospectively. They hope that those over 75 should not get their 18 percent interest rate cut. However, other groups support pension reform. As soon as the meeting on pension reform started it was interrupted, with the Minister of Education giving his opening address over the sounds of protest. Inside the venue, various groups maligned each other while at the same time asking for mutual respect. The protests both inside and outside the venue were constant. There were 35 representatives and half of these were from public school teachers the military and civil servant groups. Some groups also said in their families there were civil servants whose living conditIons were not particularly good, but they still supported pension reform. ==LIN TSUI-LAN Taiwan Indoor Air Quality Service Association Board Director== My relatives and friends who are civil servants support pension reform because they hope that in the future it is better to have something than nothing as the system will be bankrupt without reform. 130 people were supposed to participate in the meeting but in fact only 80 turned up. Some were impassioned, there were representatives from the police, fire department and teachers, who raised questions on both the legal and institutional aspects of the system. They felt that the public hearings were not open enough, there were too few, and were suspicious of the government effecting pension reform in a non-transparent way.
