MOE CUTS UNVERSITY AND GRADUATE, PLACES BY 9,840|明年大學減招9840人創紀錄 56系所走入歷史

Due to a low birth rate, the Ministry of Education will cut the number of high education students by 9840 for the upcoming year. First year University students across Taiwan will be under 250,000 for the first time. Moreover, 56 university departments will stop taking students completely and will no longer exist. Due to a low birth rate, starting from next year, the number of freshmen students across Taiwan will be under 250,000 for the first time. The Ministry of Education also cut a record-high number of higher education students: 9,840 for the upcoming year. Chung Hua University faces the greatest cut in the number of undergraduate students by 498. Next is Taiwan Shoufu University and Aletheia University. If the university has a registration rate lower than 70 percent for two consecutive years, we will cut its student numbers in proportion. National Taiwan University, often seen as the top university in Taiwan, had a cut of 17 students this time. NTU authorities said that they have no choice but to obey the MOE's decision. An NTU professor thinks that it is intentional. She also thinks that reduction in the number of students helps to enhance teaching quality. However, she said that it is not the right way to reduce the impact of the low birth rate. ==HSIAO-WEI YUAN, NTU professor of School of Forestry and Resources Conservation== We all know that we should make way for private universities ranking low in academic performance to step out of the higher education business gradually. We think that it is not right to cut the number of public university students to deal with the problem. It is also ridiculous to merge public schools together. Private universities should be closed. It is unreasonable that public universities which have nothing do with the issue need to suffer. The NTU professor said that the low birth rate is an established trend, and that the MOE has to prepare. The MOE said that it will quicken its pace to cut more students in the following years.
