On to our next story, after being accused of jeopardizing US-Sino relations for accepting President Tsai Ing-wen's phone call, Donald Trump took to twitter and criticized China for never asking the US when it devalued China's currency and militarized the South China Sea. He stated that the Chinese government cannot tell him whom he should or should not talk to. Back in Taiwan, the National Security Bureau believed that the phone call between Tsai and Trump is a good start for Taiwan. Former AIT Director William Stanton believed that Trump's campaign staff pulled strings to make the phone call happen.
Following his call with President Tsai Ing-wen, US President-elect Donald Trump criticized China on Twitter for never asking the US before manipulating its currency and militarizing the South China Sea. He stated that the Chinese government cannot tell him whom he should or should not talk to and reiterated his allegations against the Chinese government. Whether or not his words will change his future policies is worth paying attention to. Former AIT Director William Stanton was surprised at the call but was optimistic about future Taiwan-US relations.
==WILLIAM STANTON, Former AIT Director==
It is an intentional call. (Really?) Absolutely. Because Tsai Ing-wen wouldn't call out of the blue. I think that it's a very positive move.
The National Security Bureau views the call as a positive move from the US, and future Taiwan-US relations may also be viewed as positive.
==CHOU MEI-WU, NSB Deputy Director-General==
Since the Taiwan-US diplomatic ties were severed, this is a major change in the US engagement with Taiwan. Of course, it's a good thing for us. It's a good start. This is a historic change in the two sides' engagement with each other.
China's Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi criticized the call as Taiwan's petty action, which will not affect the US's policies towards China. The NSB believed that China will increase its effort to poach Taiwan's diplomatic allies, but no further information has been confirmed. When asked about whether or not the cross-strait relations will further deteriorate, the Mainland Affairs Council stated that it will not repeat the standoff in the past.
==CHANG HSIAO-YUEH, Minister, Mainland Affairs Council==
We hope that the government on the other side will not make too big a deal out of this. We will not repeat the past standoff or engage other parties to join us in a confrontation.
Since the new administration took office, cross-strait relations have reached a low point. The phone call has altered the triangular relations among the US, China, and Taiwan. How Taiwan leverages itself in future diplomatic negotiations in between the US and China will be a daunting challenge for the Tsai administration.
