On Nov 17, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US president-elect Donald Trump had their first meeting. Abe characterized the meeting as "a candid talk in a very warm atmosphere", and also praised Trump as a trustworthy leader. However, Abe did not disclose details of their conversation, saying that it was a non-official meeting.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met with the US president-elect Donald Trump in New York for the first time, and the two had a private talk that lasted 90 minutes. Abe said he wanted to build trust with the president-elect and praised Trump for being a trustworthy leader.
==SHINZO ABE, Japanese Prime Minister==
I hope both sides can establish a relationship of trust. I had a lot of confidence going into this meeting. I also presented my views and various questions were to Mr. Trump. He will be the next US president, and he is a trustworthy leader.
Mr. Abe was the first world leader to visit Trump after the election. Heavily armed guards were stationed outside the Trump Tower in Manhattan. The Japanese Foreign Ministry said this is a significant meeting because the Japanese Prime Minister has never met with a foreign leader before they officially take office since the beginning of 2000. However, Abe declined to comment on the details of his conversation with Trump on the grounds that it was an unofficial meeting.
==JACK KINGSTON, Senior Advisor to Trump==
I think this will be one of Mr. Trump's very first international meetings. I think he's going to have a lot of eyes on him to see that he needs to say the right things and be responsive. I think starting out with the meeting with the Prime Minister of Japan. I don't think you can pick a better country. It just shows our historic and significant relationship.
According to BBC reports, Trump claimed that he would scrap the TPP during his campaign. However, according to Nikkei reports, Abe sees the TPP as a means to counter China's economic dominance, and will thus likely try to persuade Trump to change his stance. As employment is a key issue within the US, Abe may also offer to cooperate with the US in trade to win Trump's support.
