As the government is planning to gradually relax the restrictions on the Japanese food imports from the Fukushima nuclear disaster zones, ten public hearings have been scheduled within 3 days. On Nov 12, two hearings were conducted in Chiayi and Tainan. At the Tainan session, violent conflicts broke out between the protesters and agriculture officials. In Chiayi County, many people complained that they didn't even receive any notice for the hearing.
Tainan City councilors and a group of protesters raised their objections at the public hearing to discuss the lifting of bans on Japanese food imports to Taiwan. Protesters said the Tsai administration organized public hearings only after they have already decided to allow food imports from the nuclear disaster areas in Japan.

You hit me…
You can't treat a government official this way.
He hit me.
No, I didn't. Stop that.
Protesters questioned the credibility of the public hearing since only one person signed in for the session. They also accused the Tsai administration for backtracking on their "nuclear-free homeland" policy.
==PROTESTER and CHEN CHI-CHUNG, Agriculture Council Vice Chair==
You are all liars. Who are you trying to fool? You promoted the non-nuclear homeland policy.
We are not importing radiation affected food.
They are contaminated.
Ten public hearings across Taiwan have been scheduled from Nov 12 to 15. Many people and local councils representatives were upset at such a short notice for such important hearings.
==ATTENDEE==
(They chose such a remote location for the first public hearing.) Their intention is clear. I actually saw the notice from a friend's Facebook page just last night. We had to rush here today.
==WANG CHI LI, KMT Chiayi County Councilor==
Food contaminated by radiation will not just give you an upset stomach. You don't just get diarrhea. You can get cancer.
At the Yunlin session, legislator Chang Li-shan and local representatives also staged a protest. The Council of Agriculture explained that they held the hearing sessions over the weekend to allow more people to participate. However, civil society groups and local council members denounced the central government for trying to rush through the process and keeping the public in the dark.
