On October 16, anti-nuclear candidate Yoneyama Ryuichi was elected governor of Niigata. He is the second anti-nuclear candidate elected after July's governor election in Kagoshima prefecture. The election result is a huge blow to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's energy policy, which attempts to restart the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant, the world's biggest nuclear power plant.

On October 16, anti-nuclear candidate Yoneyama Ryuichi, recommended by three opposition parties, won the 20th gubernatorial election in Niigata Prefecture with more than 528,000 votes. He gathered about 60,000 votes more than former Nagaoka Mayor Tamio Mori, who was backed by the ruling Liberal Democratic party.

The victory belongs to everyone. It also belongs to the entire Niigata prefecture. From now on, it is indeed a whole new start.
The 49-year-old candidate was a medical doctor. To run for the election, he left the Democratic Party of Japan, and served as an independent candidate. Since the start of the campaign, Yoneyama expressed a clear anti-nuclear position. For the sake of the residents' safety, he promised to continue the policy of the departing governor, who refused to restart the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant.

We will soon face the subject whether to restart the nuclear plant or not. As I have promised all of you, under current circumstances where I can't protect people's lives and their living, I clearly declare that I can't approve a restart of the plant.
According to Tokyo Electric Power Company, the seven-reactor Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant is the world's biggest nuclear power plant. It was shut down in 2011 after the Fukushima nuclear accident for periodic inspection. Kyodo News said that election results in the Niigata prefecture and the Kagoshima prefecture show that the public does not believe in Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's energy policy. Abe's pro-nuclear Liberal Democratic Party sees a tough contest to reboot more reactors for 30 percent of the nation's electricity needs.
