ANTI-FORCED EVICTION GROUPS PROTEST AT KAOHSIUNG COUNCIL|陳菊施政報告 反迫遷等團體赴議會陳情

During Kaohsiung City Mayor Chen Chu's biannual state of the city report at the City Council, members from 25 civil groups surrounded the council hall in protest of recent reports of forced evictions and industrial pollution. Yet their demand to debate with the mayor over several hotly contended issues, was turned down. Chen said all her policies have been made and carried out in accordance with law. Over a hundred members from 25 anti-forced eviction groups were protesting at the gate of the Kaohsiung City Council, because Mayor Chen Chu was about to make her policy address. Those protesters demanded the Mayor to listen to their voices. There was an anti-protest group on the scene as well, members with different intentions were shouting at each other. ==CHEN MING-PIN, Kaohsiung Civil Groups Alliance Convener== Sad to say this, so far we don't have any way to discuss and negotiate with the city government. If you (Mayor Chen) are sincere, tell media the place and time for debating, we will accept. The Alliance members believe that Kaohsiung City Government is not honest enough to make all controversial issues public. They demand to establish an investigation task force or to hold public hearings. They hope to have a face-to-face debate with Mayor Chen. But the Mayor believes that she acts in accordance with law, and had refused to debate with the Alliance. ==CHEN CHU, Kaohsiung City Mayor== (Will you debate with the alliance groups?) Impossible. If Kaohsiung City Government were not acting in accordance with the law, handling matters illegally, then we can talk about right and wrong. It's a matter of choices. I am the mayor, I made policies and decisions based on the benefits of the majority. Mayor Chen said there is no need to debate, she cannot fulfill requests from everyone. She respects different voices and will examine into her team for communicating more properly when negotiating with citizens.
