Many elderly people have degenerative joint problems and need artificial joints. However, due to the quality of medical supplies and the complications from the surgery, some of them need to be replaced again after a few years. The National Health Insurance Administration announced that the artificial joint registration system will provide a poor product's warning, to reduce patient morbidity and mortality. Taiwan is an aging society. Many elderly people have knee or hip degeneration and other issues, so that they cannot walk on their own and need surgery for artificial joints. However, some patients, possibly due to medical technology, materials and patients' individual health or other reasons, need to repeat the replacement surgery. This may increase the risk of infection. ==GU MING-ZHOU Orthopedic doctor== When a joint is replaced again, some bone must be cut out and if the bone is disintegrated, after the aluminum and the bone rub, the joint head will erode, so that the replacement isn't so effective. According to statistics from the National Health Insurance Administration, in recent years, the number of the most common seven artificial joint surgeries have risen year-on-year from 40,000 in 2011 to nearly 48,000, in 2015, and the five year replacement rate is 2.18 percent. However, since January this year, the NHIA implemented an artificial joint registration system and will be able to monitor the patient's condition at any time to reduce the morbidity and mortality of patients. ==LEE BO-CHANG Dir-Gen, NHIA== There may be some brands that have some post-operative effects on patients so that they need to do another replacement, in the future if there is evidence for that we can consider it. The NHIA stressed that the artificial joint registration system can provide warnings about bad products and improve the quality of medical care. In the future, the public can also access information such as health books, hospitals, medical equipment and so on. Taiwan is the first country in Asia, to have such an artificial joint registration system. TRANSLATED BY:CLARE LEAR
