NORTH KOREA ANNOUNCES NUCLEAR WARHEAD MISSILE TEST|北韓核武試爆 引規模5地震.歷年來最大

On Sept. 9, at 8:30 am, North Korea undertook the fifth nuclear explosion since 2006. The power was equivalent to a magnitude 5 earthquake, the largest North Korean explosion so far. The country publicly announced for the first time that this was a nuclear warhead explosion test and this was strongly condemned by neighboring countries. ==YONHAP NEWS AGENCY REPORT== The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre has just reported a magnitude 5.0 earthquake at 9 am. South Korea's Meteorological Administration held a press conference. Measuring explosions in terms of earthquake magnitude, North Korea's five explosions have grown in strength. ==LIU YONG-YU, South Korea's Meteorological Admin. Earthquake expert== First this earthquake is the largest, the first was magnitude 3.9, then second was 4.5, the third was 4.9 the fourth 4.8 and this is the largest. On Sept. 9 at 12 midday, North Korean official media reported a successful nuclear warhead explosion. ==RI CHUN-HEE North Korean Television News== Our country's nuclear scientists have made a successful explosion on the testing ground in the north, researching nuclear armed warhead missiles. South Korea estimates that North Korea's test of this nuclear missile is equivalent to 10,000 tons of TNT. This is around 67 percent of the Hiroshima nuclear bomb. This is the fifth such nuclear explosion undertaken by North Korea since 2006, and the third since Kim Jong Un took power. There have also been 8 missile test firings of 13 ballistic missiles two of which were claimed to be launched from submarines. Neighbouring countries and the US are both deeply concerned and highly critical. When North Korea started its missile activity earlier in the year some analysts were sceptical of its ability, but as tests have progressed they have found that NK has shrunk nuclear warheads sufficiently to attach them to missiles which can attack Japan, Korea and the western Pacific. The United Nations Security Council was set to discuss the latest test and whether the 15-member body should punish North Korea with more sanctions. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon urged the 15-member group to remain united and take action that would "urgently break this accelerating spiral of escalation." U.S. President Barack Obama, after speaking by telephone with South Korean President Park Geun-hye and with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, agreed they would work with the Security Council and other powers to vigorously enforce existing measures against North Korea and to take "additional significant steps, including new sanctions."
