PENSION REFORM POLARISES GENERATIONS|

The debate on pension reform has polarised the differences between generations. The younger generation faces bankruptcy of the pension system, unless there is reform. For the older generation, pension reform is a breach of trusts by the government. At the age of 70, this man has taken to the streets in protest for the first time. He is protesting against changes to his pension. ==Mr CHANG Retired civil servant== Of course I will go to protest. It's unreasonable, we have been stigmatised. We get what we should get by law. The government should give it to us when we retire. After working for 40 years as a civil servant, Mr. Chang now gets a monthly pension. However, he now has to face the stigma of his category of pension being the main reason that the pension system faces bankruptcy. He says the protest is against being stigmatised and even more against breach of trust by the government. ==Mr CHANG Retired civil servant== I've worked hard all my life, of course I want to enjoy myself now. But what they promised us, it's like a contract, you can't break a contract, that's basic knowledge. Mr. Chang took the civil servant exam when he was young so that he could enjoy his retirement. However, for the younger generation, this guarantee of funded retirement is unlikely. Ms. Shi who took the public teachers exam at the age of 23 has taught for nine years. Each month she pays NT$2 to NT$3,000 into a pension fund, but has heard that the pension system is bankrupt, so she is very worried that she will have no pension. ==SHI HAN-YI Public high school teacher== What we are paying now is the civil servant labor insurance, which is actually a bit higher. But in fact we all know, that when we actually come to retire, since there has been no pension reform, the system will be bankrupt at any moment now, and we won't get anything. Shi supports the government undertaking pension reform as she believes the system faces bankruptcy and the younger generation should not have to bear the brunt of it. ==SHI SHAN-YI Public school teacher== The larger environment has changed, the current legislation without any amendment means that we are facing bankruptcy. So we should make some adjustments for generational justice. The two generations have polarised opinions. Pension reform needs to be implemented in a way such as to remove the clash of generations and is a complex issue for the government. TRANSLATED BY:CLARE LEAR
